Writing in Light: The Silent Scenario and the Japanese Pure Film Movement by Joanne Bernardi,

Writing in Light: The Silent Scenario and the Japanese Pure Film Movement by Joanne Bernardi,
While most people associate Japanese film with modern directors like Akira Kurosawa, Japan's cinema has a rich tradition going back to the silent era. Japan's "pure film movement" of the 1910s is widely held to mark the birth of film theory as we know it and is a touchstone for historians of early cinema. Yet this work has been difficult to access because so few prints have been preserved. Joanne Bernardi offers the first book-length study of this important era, recovering a body of lost film and establishing its significance in the development of Japanese cinema. Building on a wealth of original-language sources -- much of it translated here for the first time -- she examines how the movement challenged the industry's dependence on pre-existing stage repertories, preference for lecturers over intertitles, and the use of female impersonators. Bernardi provides in-depth analysis of key scripts -- The Glory of Life, A Father's Tears, Amateur Club, and The Lust of the White Serpent -- and includes translations in an appendix. These films offer case studies for understanding the craft of screenwriting during the silent era and shed light on such issues as genre, authorship and control, and gender representation. Writing in Light helps fill important gaps in the history of Japanese silent cinema. By identifying points at which "pure film" discourse merges with changing international trends and attitudes toward film, it offers an important resource for film, literary, and cultural historians.

These freshly edited editions have been praised as "an exceptionally good choice" by The Shakespeare Newsletter and are now being presented in hardcover for the very first time. These hardcover editions of King Lear, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night feature the same unique and much-praised page design as the popular paperback editions: full explanatory notes appear on pages facing the text to make for easy reading and comprehension. Each edition contains a helpful introduction to Shakespeare's language, as well as introductory notes on Shakespeare's life, theater, and publication of his plays. The volumes are beautifully illustrated throughout -- the images of objects, clothing, and mythological figures mentioned in the plays are all drawn from the Library's vast collection of rare books. Shutter (photography) - In photography, a shutter is a device that allows light to pass for a determined period of time, for the purpose of exposing photographic film or a light-sensitive electronic sensor to the right amount of light to create a permanent image of a view.

Night photography - Night photography generally refers to photographs taken outdoors between twilight and dusk. Originally night photographers had a choice between using artificial light or leaving the camera on a tripod and using a long shutter exposure, often for seconds or even minutes per exposure, in order to give the film enough time to capture enough light to record a proper exposure.

Exposure (photography) - In photography, exposure is the total amount of light allowed to fall on the sensor (photographic film or CCD) during the process of taking a photograph. Exposure is measured in exposure value (ev), with higher values denoting more light.
